If you're a New Jersey resident unable to work due to a disability, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). However, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has strict qualification criteria. Understanding these requirements can help you determine if you’re eligible and prepare a stronger application.
Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.
Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.
Basic SSDI Qualifications in New Jersey
To qualify for SSDI in New Jersey, you must meet the following conditions:
1. You Must Have a Qualifying Disability
The SSA considers you disabled if:
- You have a medical condition (physical or mental) that prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA)
- Your condition is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
- Your disability meets or equals one of the conditions listed in the SSA’s Listing of Impairments
2. You Must Have Sufficient Work Credits
SSDI is based on your work history. You earn work credits through wages or self-employment income. Generally:
- You need 40 work credits, and 20 of those must have been earned in the last 10 years (for most adults)
- Younger applicants may qualify with fewer credits, depending on age
3. You Must Not Be Engaging in Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)
If you're working and earning more than a certain amount (updated annually by the SSA), you may not be considered disabled. In 2025, the SGA limit is:
- $1,550/month for non-blind individuals
- $2,590/month for blind individuals
Medical Evidence Requirements
To prove your condition qualifies, you’ll need:
- Complete medical records from all treating doctors
- Test results, imaging, hospital records, and specialist evaluations
- A detailed statement from your doctor explaining how your condition limits your ability to work
Additional Considerations for New Jersey Residents
- New Jersey residents apply through the federal SSA system, but local Disability Determination Services (DDS) offices evaluate medical eligibility
- If denied, you can appeal through New Jersey’s Office of Hearings Operations (OHO), where an Administrative Law Judge may review your case
